"Many previous approaches to public space in sprawled conditions have attempted to impose traditional urban models rather than seek new types of spaces, forms and programmes. They have seldom led to innovative work and have often contradicted contemporary notions of scale, diversity and flexibility"
It can be seen that the need for public space. There are two ways to slove this, one is to increase the amount of parks and shopping plazas and etc, the other is to
"address contemporary notions of the public and public space but without projecting new urban configurations".
That is, the occurrence of multifunctional spaces. I, myself think this is a perfect idea to both save money, space and enjoy the excitement. In fact, this multifunctional public space is going to be included in my design for the (responding- to- avatar )architecture . I think the problems of the restricted site can also be utilized , like the previous idea of observing the site and merging the design into the site.
moreover,I also agree with "to use, appropriate and inhabit the space in between spread-out buildings, and how to redefine this space as part of the public realm"
The need for expanding the cities are unnecessary as long as we can utilise and solve the problem on the current sites. Simply running away from the problem is not the solution. To find a way of integrating multiple use and convenience as well as the native plants, animals to share the space would make a architecture truly successful. This is an idea that is been proposed worldwide and I googled one of the architecture that would engage with the very idea.
This is a design named "hutong paopao" designed by MAD .It help to accomodatetraditional Chinese architecture to adapt to the contemporary city. The design its self is a attached bathroom that is very suitable for the dense population in China, while increasing hygiene level.
design added to the site model
Its entrance is at the rooftop, while the mirror shell can be used as a mirror and for aesthetic purposes.
